The Tragedy of Sister Code
By Shari Mckenzie
Despite supporting important causes, like Lupus and sisterly love, Sister Code has an extremely weak plot that is supported by cliche characters. Instead of exploring these important issues the movie spends much of its time playing up stereotypes pertaining to African Americans. You’re better off saving your popcorn, time, and Netflix subscription on something else. IMDb is being nice with the rating 4.4 out of 10, but I don’t think it deserves that much credit.“She broke sister code!” is supposed to be the punchline in the movie. You can’t get any cornier than that. It’s the story of three foster care sisters’ journey together. They meet in the home of foster mom as young girls living in Los Angeles. The sisters begin to count on one another as they evolve through stages in life. The storyline picks up with the sisters in their adult life.
The Sisters
Lexi (played by Amber Rose) is twenty-eight, living at sister Lavae’s home. I assume they gave Amber the role of Lexi for marketing the movie because her acting is beyond horrible. I guess her role was to impersonate Kim Kardashian. If picture Kim on her TV show, you got Lexi (absolutely annoying.) Her character is “ a free spirit” so she’s irresponsible, an air head, and sleeping with different men to pass time. She has an important investment meeting for her lingerie line. Sister Shelia used her contacts to setup the meeting for Lexi with the investor, Dewayne. She shows up over thirty minutes late insulting his time. As a result, Lexi loses her possible investor, but soon finds another. She turns to Lil Danger, a married rapper. Lexi uses a supposedly sex tape with Lil Danger to blackmail him into investing in her lingerie line. Because of her stupidity, that deal falls through too. Lexi doesn’t get it together until the last ten minutes of the movie.
Sheila (played by Eva Marcel)is a successful business owner. She owns a public relation firm. Her main competitor is her former boss, Corine Wells. Sheila, Corine, and their posses meet up in a club, and square off similarly to the dance battle in White Chicks. Although Sheila has a successful business, her love life isn’t so successful. She either thinks she doesn’t need a man or deals with men beneath her standards. Of course she has the perfect guy right in front of her nose, if only she would look.
Lavae (played by Drew Sidora) is the oldest out of the sisters. She appears to have her life together. She’s the glue of the family, always fixing issues between the Sheila and Lexi. She’s pregnant by a wonderful, sexy chocolate man, named Thomas. Unfortunately Lavae is so worried about keeping the peace that she doesn’t inform her sisters or Thomas that she has lupus. The disease puts mothers and children at high risk during pregnancy. Thomas proposes to Lavae before the birth of their child, bad timing for her to reveal she has the disease. The entire family is shaken, but they’re resilient. Sadly Lavae eventually dies from birth complications because of the disease. Her two sisters finally find love and success and cheerily move on with their lives. It’s really quite odd. Is mourning big sis not part of the Sister Code?

Final word by Dana
I'm at a loss to find some recent Black movies that are actually good. This is not one of them although it tried. Eva playing Sheila was charming and funny. Amber Rose, bless her heart, wasn't acting in any sense of the word. The character is too close to her own life and identity. Drew Sidora's story and arc is what ruined the movie for me. Her traits are 1. pregnant and 2. She has lupus. That's all she ever talks about and she isn't given as much screen time as her sisters. WHY did she have to die? Making a character die in a film doesn't automatically make the movie GOOD. The movie also cheated when they killed her off. They wheel off Lavae to emergency surgery as her sisters and fiance' look on, terrified. Then it goes to six months later. Apparently she died. Her two sisters don't seem too bent out of shape about it. No funeral was shown, no mourning is shown. Why present a death in such a way about sisters with such an "unshakable bond"? Not to mention the fact that Lavae is narrating the film and continues to narrate from the grave. I think this movie could have worked a lot better if they didn't kill off one sister, or if they didn't have her at all. Lavae got the least amount of screen time even before she died so if they didn't find her story line interesting why include it? After the off screen death Sheila finds more success and good man and finally has a fashion show. They both seem happy. What about your motherless niece ? What about your sister who died JUST SIX MONTHS ago. What type of sister code is this?
