Black Men & Women That Actually LIVE Through a Horror Film

*In chronological order
1. Danny Glover as Mike Harrigan (Lieutenant) in Predator 2 (1990)
Glover as Lt. Mike Harrigan is that dude! A highly respected officer working on a case between Colombian and Jamaican drug lords; he and his team investigate an assumed gang related massacre which leaves many of the Colombian drug dealers dead. Mike immediately realizes something is strange because of how the bodies are found.
It doesn't seem as if a human was capable of the slayings. The female survivor tells the cops in her language that the killer was "the Devil". There were no follow up questions?
A special agent  named Keys (Gary Busey) and his team take over the case which annoys and disturbs Mike. He is sure there is some sort of cover up afoot, and isn't willing to move on. After Mike gets wind of another brutal slaying he sends one of his officers to the scene after hours to gather evidence.
Unfortunately Predator shows up too and the officer is killed. Mike vows to go after the person that did this. LOL. After losing more of his crew to the unknown killer Mike confronts the special agent and he finally reveals that the assailant is a Predator and is not of this world. They have been trying to capture one for years because of their technological advances. The special agents set a trap in a warehouse.
Mike immediately heads inside to avenge his team. The special agents go in after him and succumb to the Predator. Agent Keys is able to stun the monster just long enough to even the playing field for the already wounded Mike. Mike kills the Predator with its' own weapon. Suddenly more Predators appear and Mike assumes they're here to kill him. Instead they pick up their fallen soldier to take home and the Elder Predator gives Mike an antique pistol. A sign of respect. Not bad Lt. Mike, not bad at all.
2. Duane Martin as Joel (the camera man) in Scream 2 (1997)
The Scream franchise is known for it's satire and and commentary in the horror genre, and they aren't afraid to break the rules, or make their own. Joel, Gale Weathers new cameraman, is happy with his new gig, (before this he was filming Bingo finals.)
His excitement sours when he realizes that the murders are starting to happen again. Joel tells Gale "I want to report the news, not be the news." The reporter coaxes Joel to stay and reassures him that he's safe although Joel comments "I'm a verb away from leaving."
When a murder happens in the van Joel works in, and he discovers Gales last camera man was killed (with all the gruesome details in Gales book) Joel does the only thing any black person would do......He gets the hell out of there! His boss pleads with him to stay. "Joel I need you."
Joel quips back "No, you need your head examined."
Without a doubt Joel made the right decision. There are three other black people that die in this film, yes three; including the character played by Jada Pinkett-Smith who dies first, and they had the nerve to put her on the movie poster. When Joel gets word that everything is officially over and the killer is dead, he returns to work, proving black men just wanna work, like everyone else.

3. Ice Cube as Danny (film crew) in Anaconda (1997)

This role as a the laid back, mean muggin, west coast rap knockin', film assistant, wasn't too much of a stretch for Cube and that's fine. In this movie Cube has to tango with not only a huge man eating snake but the crazy man that comes aboard their crew ship and forces everyone to hunt it. At the close of the film Cube and his costar (J-LO) are taped together and made to be live bait.
The giant snake becomes trapped with them in a net! The snake wasn't pleased about the netting and decides to go after the person hunting him, giving Cube opportunity to break their tape. The greedy snake spits out his meal and goes after Cube and J-Lo again. "I think I can blow him up" he screams! His fast thinking and fuse lighting save him and his friend and send the snake to a fiery grave.
Other survivors: 1 other Person of color, 1 white male

4. Brandy as Karla (best friend) in I still Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

I'm not gonna lie, Brandys' character is annoying af in this movie. She keeps pushing her best friend Julie(Jennifer Love Hewitt) to get over her first love (Freddie Printz Jr.) and tries to get Julie to move on to a kid named Will. Not only that, she invites this Will character to accompany herself, her boyfriend (Mehki Phifer) and Julie as they travel to a remote island getaway that they won tickets for over the radio.
Little does Karla know, Julies last bestie was hacked to death while a parade of people marched by in the last movie. When they get to the island they realize it's hurricane season, and that's the least of their problems.
FOUR black people die in this movie, yes FOUR. Two are natives to the Island the crew is vacationing on, one is a man who works for the resort and the other is my boy, Mehki Phifer, (duh, the only other black person). Mehki is hooked through the back of his neck and dragged away, right in front of his own girlfriend!
Brandy has quite a few brushes with death as well. She's chased by the killer around the hotel and has to jump out of a window onto a glass ceiling. There, she falls through the glass into a bedroom and the killer follows. Another staff member in the hotel shouts to Julie "just leave her she's not gonna make it."
Bitch say what. Ironically that same woman dies in front of Brandy giving her a chance to run off. Brandy crashes into more glass and then it's assumed she's dead too. At the very end of the film here she comes limping out of a pile of debris. The funny thing is Brandy's character sorta caused all this to happen by pushing Julie to date someone else. See what happens when you're best friend meddles.

5. LL Cool J as Ronny (Security Guard) in Halloween H20 (1998)

You can't NOT love LL in this movie. Playing the security guard at a gated boarding school, where massacre survivor Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) works, LL is the epitome of cool, calm and collected. He is well liked by his colleagues and the students adore him, especially when he allows some to sneak out during lunch hour.
His real dream is to be a writer and during his slow time he reads his work to his wife over the phone. His work is pretty steamy "her slender legs led up her long body, to two melon breasts".
When the shit starts to hit the fan and Michael Meyers returns there are several instances where it's safe to assume LL is dead, but this cool cat must have 9 lives. The murderer tricks him into opening the  front gate and stalks  around his office, visibly freaking LL out. The next time we see LL he scares the crap out of Laurie and she almost shoots him out of sheer fright.
At the climax of the movie Laurie's boyfriend actually does shoot him, again thinking he's the killer (racial profiling anyone?) When the dust settles our resilient security emerges, wounded, victimized, but alive. Let it be noted that none of his injuries were inflicted by the actual killer. SMH

6. LL Cool J as Preacher (the cook) in Deep Blue Sea (1999)

Cool J is back and basically invincible at this point. Smart ass sharks and an underwater facility collapsing into itself prove to be quite a terrifying combo.
Cool J is great as Preacher, the man just as passionate about his cooking as he is about the lord. This cunning shark tale pulls an ole' switcher-oo on us involving the two black people in this film. We know they don't have a chance in hell of both surviving.
LL's character is the cook, kinda seems like a throwaway person right? We also have the great Samuel Jackson, a veteran actor, capable of commanding any scene. Samuel's character is also a survivor from another near death experience, when he was trapped during an avalanche. Upon first viewing we all assumed if any black person was going to live it would be Jackson. We all sat, our mouths agape, when Samuel was standing by open water and doing what he does best: giving a passionate, powerful speech, when he is suddenly ripped to shreds by the genetically enhanced Shark.
Because of this "great sacrifice" LL was allowed to live through this film, but it's not like he wasn't in harms way this time. First his friendly pet parrot is eaten in front of him and then LL is nearly cooked alive in his own industrial sized oven.
At the films climax our cook finds himself in the Sharks mouth as it tries to escape its underwater barrier and take his black ass with him. Using his trusty crucifix he stabs the shark in its eye and escapes.

7. Taye Diggs as Eddie (regular Joe) House on Haunted Hill (1999)

Spend the night in a lavish mansion and win a cool million, sounds ideal. (Taye Diggs)Eddie shows up to a party he was anonymously invited to with seven other strangers. Everyone introduces themselves, Eddie tells them he was a former baseball player. He is immediately intrigued by  a woman named Jennifer.
The huge house suddenly goes into lock down and one of the guests reveals that the house is alive and occupied by the twisted souls who used to be doctors and patients at this location, when it was an asylum. After some fact checking the guest realize that they are all descendants of the doctors who performed wicked acts and the house is getting revenge on their ancestors.
The small group splits up and  people start dying.  Eddie saves Jennifer more than once and then is sequestered from her and the group. Eddie doesn't really find his life in peril until the very end of the film when "the darkness" ascends from the basement. It swallows up the remaining people.
Eddie and Jennifer make it to the attic and find an open window to climb out of. Jennifer gets out then the exit is closed by the "darkness". With Eddies last few seconds of life he screams to the entity that is about to swallow him "I'm adopted."
It works. He's let out the house. Him and Jennifer find a bag of checks worth millions of dollars for them to split. Eddie may have come off the best out of anyone on this list, though his performance was the least entertaining.

8. Rah Digga as Miss Maggie (nanny) in 13 Ghosts (2001)

Rah Digga as Maggie is the no nonsense nanny that's intelligent and funny. She come aboard to help the family after the mothers sudden and tragic death. When the family is offered this gigantic house with odd writing on the wall Rah immediately announces "Miss Maggie DOES NOT do walls!"
The excitement of this beautiful house instantly wanes when the family discovers the house is actually a machine and their are some gruesome ghosts in the basement. The adults and kids get separated from one another and the dad panics.
A fake ass ghost hunter claims she is there to help and tells the father the only way to save his children is to hurl himself into the center of the machine. Maggie responds as the voice of reason "No way, hell no lady. Come on Arthur, that's suicide."
Minutes later Maggie is knocked out when the father goes off to prepare to sacrifice himself. Maggie awakens just in time to mess up the machines controls making it explode, and saving everyone! At the end of the film when everyone is safe Maggie declares all of this was not in her job description "I QUIT!"
Other Survivors: 1 white female, 2 white males
9. Sanaa Lathan as Alexa (HBIC) in Alien V. Predator (2002)
Sanaa get's major kudos for playing the lead woman, THE STAR, of a huge Blockbuster Horror Flick, that's  actually a really fun film. Another noteworthy fact is that with the exception of Predator 2 she is the ONLY person to be the SOLE or should I say SOUL SURVIVOR. Alexa is the truth!
We meet this bad ass as she's climbing up a cliff (for fun) and she even picks up a phone call mid climb. Being the brilliant Scientist that she is, she is personally requested to explore a newly discovered Cavern in Alaska. Because the timing and logistics make no sense, home girl tells them to find someone else. #BOSS. When she's approached again with her requests met, Alexa is off to lead everyone on the frigid expedition.
When they get to their destination not only does our hero look BAD AF in her red leather, she sets the rules and demands respect. The crew splits into different groups and find out that they're in a lair of Aliens, that are being hunted by Predators.  People start dying by both monsters.
Alexa kills off one of those gross Aliens and gains the respect of a Predator. Acknowledging that the Predators are the superior race she teams up with him. They are able to communicate with out talking and he even gives her a shield to repel the Aliens deadly saliva. Alexa is also tested, by having to kill one of her crew members that has an alien in his belly, she passes with flying colors; gaining the dominant species loyalty.
At the end Alexa is given an honorary mark on her cheek and staff from her new friend. The other Predators respect her as well and leave her be as they go their way. Sanaa Lathan showed us how to OWN a horror film!
Other Survivors: NONE
10. Busta Rhymes as Freddie (the Exec Producer) in Halloween Resurrection (2004)
From a franchise standpoint I absolutely hate this film. With that being said, Busta Rhymes as the founder of Dangertainment, makes this film worth watching. Freddie decides to do a live stream of college students in the old Meyers house, an experiment to see if the place is cursed. In order to make sure things "pop" and get as many views as possible, Freddie dresses up as Michael Meyers and then immediately runs into the real Michael Meyers.
Watch the below clip to see how Busta goes off on this serial killer, thinking it's his employee. He actually sends Michael off to kill the only other black person in this film played by Tyra Banks
Eventually Freddie and one of the students, Sara, realize they are the only people in the house not dead and that the real Michael is cutting people up left and right. Busta and Sara fight off the killer several times. This includes a swinging kick that sends the killer flying out of a window and Busta finally "killing" him by setting Meyers on fire.
Other Survivors: White female
11. Daniel Kaluuya as Chris (the boyfriend/ fresh body) in Get Out (2016)
(OK, we are jumping over 10 years from our last movie.) Get Out is not like  the other movies on this list. It's not a slasher movie, it's not about ghosts but it's still scary as hell. Get Out is social commentary on today's political climate, where lets, face it, tensions continue to rise.
Daniel, as Chris is well acted and why wouldn't he be? Get Out is all about race relations, and no one knows more about race relations, than a black person. Chris is joining his girlfriend Rose on a long weekend at her families estate. Chris feels a bit uncomfortable because it appears Rose's family had no idea Chris was black and they go out of their way to act like it doesn't bother them. They also have black staff, and that too doesn't quite sit well with him.
Roses mother practices hypnosis and offers to help Chris kick his cigarette habit. He declines, of course. Somehow that night, he finds himself in a chair, across from Roses mother and she puts him under her spell using a tea cup and spoon. This wicked woman also introduces Chris to the 'sunken place'. "Now sink into the floor" The sunken place is like being in your body but having no control. It's Hellish and terrifying.
Chris wakes up in his bed thinking it was all a dream but not having a desire to smoke anymore. Roses parents inform the couple that the family is hosting all their friends and family this very weekend, an annual get together, Rose acts like she has no idea. Chris mentally prepares to be surrounded by only old white people all day. Luckily for our protagonist, he has a best friend named Rod, with a level head back home. Chris calls Rod several times throughout the weekend and his friend goes off when Chris tells him about the hypnosis "How are you not scared of this man? They could have had you doing all kind of shit!"
Rod is easily alarmed and suggests Roses family might be part of some kinky sex thing and all the black people are being hypnotized by Roses mom. The fun part about Get Out is that as an audience we know something sinister is going on but we don't know what it is exactly and who is in on it.
Chris is introduced to hundreds of  affluent white folks and believes them to be family and friends, they ask him lots of inappropriate questions  they've always wanted to ask black people, but this is nothing new for Chris. Little does he know these white people are all sizing him up as a perspective vessel for one of them.
Chris finally realizes something evil is actually happening but it's too late. Someone has already purchased the rights to Chris's body and he wakes up strapped to a chair. He is told , by the man who plans on using his body, that his subconscious is going to be transferred to Chris's body while Chris is banished to the sunken place. Because our guy figured out a loophole to the hypnosis through a flash, like a camera, Chris is able to get out of his restraints and has to fight each of Roses family member to get out. At the same time, his A-1 since Day-1, Rod is on his way to come help Chris, since Chris stopped responding and Rod had an odd phone call with Rose.
Now just because Chris is starring in this film, that doesn't mean he gets to live. At the end of the film, it's just Chris, a black man, assumed dangerous and Rose, a white woman, assumed innocent, and there are dead bodies on the ground and a gun. All of a sudden flashing lights appear. This scene is incredibly tense as Rose puts on fake tears, sure the officer will kill Chris without question. The officer turns out to be Rod, (he's national security hence the vehicle with flashing lights). Rod saves Chris and the two drive off, with this situation as just another odd experience brought on by white people, fearing blacks, yet wanting to be them.
Other survivors: None
Final word. Black people dying in Horror movies are a huge cliche' and they are prevalent even today because usually, the black person, isn't the star of the film. They are the best friend, or the orderly, or the boyfriend, just another body for the killer, or beast to consume as the (usually) white girl gets away. These eleven movies are examples that break the mold. Out of hundreds of horror flicks where black people aren't the star, and die, we have these  few movies to give us hope. Happy Halloween.
